DPS Petition

Article written by Gabriel Nagel

A group of students from across DPS has been working together since February of 2021 to create a resolution for DPS to address the climate crisis.

Right now, DPS has no plan to address climate change and is not required to follow the City of Denver or Colorado’s climate goals. We (the students) believe that DPS needs to pass our resolution to address the climate crisis.

We are asking for the DPS board of education to:

  1. Use 100% clean electricity by 2030 in accordance with Denver's 100% Renewable Electricity Action Plan

  2. Reduce overall greenhouse gas emissions by at least 90% of the levels of district-wide greenhouse gas emissions that existed in 2005 by 2050, in line with Colorado’s Climate Action Plan

  3. Prioritize sustainability actions in schools and communities facing greater inequity and/or environmental injustice

  4. Make sustainability a core value of the district and consider sustainability when making decisions

Environmental Justice

The climate crisis impacts all people, yet disproportionately affects young people, people of color, and people in poverty, thereby exacerbating existing inequities and limiting opportunities. Social and racial justice is environmental justice.

We recognize that this will have financial impacts for DPS. We ask that life-cycle costs and environmental impacts be considered equally alongside financial impacts for district operations.
